John was an ironmaster in Chester County and owned Valley Forge and Warwick Furnace. At the beginning of the Revolution, he was a London trained lawyer, a Crown appointed Justice of the Peace for Philadelphia County and a Judge of the Common Pleas for the City. During the war, he left Pottstown and joined the British, supplying them with information. He was declared a traitor, lost assets, and became a refugee. He is known in numerous publications as “The Loyalist”.
