A primary value of this book is the reality check that it provides us Westerners, who go about our peaceful lives knowing very little of true stories like this that are transpiring at the same time. We really need more of such stories. We tend to think that peace and prosperity will always be our experience in the West. The Russian Mennonites thought the same before World War 1. Most Mennonites in the West are unprepared for deprivation and persecution. The book is not fiction; it is a record of actual terrible events which have happened not all that long ago.
